Sorcery Ascendant Sequence deal with Harper Voyager!

To my readers:

I’m extremely pleased to announce I’ve signed a three book global deal with Harper Voyager to publish the Sorcery Ascendant Sequence! I’m thrilled to be published alongside authors such as George RR Martin, Robin Hobb, Raymond Feist, Janny Wurts, Joe Abercrombie, Peter V Brett, Trudi Canavan and Mark Lawrence, who all sit on the Voyager list. They’re excellent company for me to be in!

For those that are interested, the deal is for World English rights for simultaneous launches in Australia, the U.S. and the U.K. Commonwealth in 2015/2016. It will be announced in Publishers Marketplace and Publishers Weekly very soon.

I’ve been exceptionally fortunate with my success so far. My books could have gone unnoticed—good books tank all the time, great books go unseen, and authors give up on their dreams. After the self publishing success of my first two books I was in a position that, while not unique, was certainly rare. It fell to me to decide what was best for my career going forward so I could continue to write full time. After all, that’s the dream. And one I’ll fight tooth and nail to hold onto.

So when Harper Voyager approached me on the strength of my self published books and made an offer, we reached a negotiated agreement. The result will be a far more polished version of the Sorcery Ascendant Sequence, with the full force of Harper Voyager behind it. Unfortunately this means pushing out the release date of book 3. New publishing dates are below.

I know this delay will be cause for some reader unease and disappointment. One of my main concerns was doing right by the readers who put me in this position and Harper Voyager agreed. We put our heads together and came up with a compromise which cut a full year from the original proposed publishing date for book 3. It’s still some time away but it will be worth the wait! Because of the condensed timeline, for the last month both Harper Voyager and myself have already been working on the series even though the contract hadn’t been signed. That’s how committed we both were to bringing the publishing date for book 3 forward as much as possible. And in the interim I’ll do my best to provide extra content for readers who enjoyed the first two books in the world of the Sorcery Ascendant Sequence.

Book 1 new version: September 2015. Old version unavailable when HV version goes up for pre-order.

Book 2 new version: April 2016. Old version unavailable when HV version goes up for pre-order.

Book 3: September 2016.

Thanks for taking the time & trouble to explain things Mitch. I’ll certainly look forward to re reading the first two, a good book is often better the second time around.
It’s going to be a long 18 months for book 3 though!

No worries Craig. I owed my readers an explanation, and we did all we could to bring the publishing dates forward. I have some ideas for extra content – plus there are plenty of cut scenes people might be interested in reading!

Thank you for keeping us updated. Yes, disappointed about the wait but I am your fan so I will wait for it. Congratulations on the deal Mitch, very exciting!

    • Mitchell Hogan says:

Sorry for the disappointment Monia, but I’m happy you’ll wait for book 3! Chances are I’ll self publish another book before it’s out…

Are books 1 and 2 going to change or be rewritten? I already purchased the ebooks and audible versions. I understand that sometimes a publisher will find discrepancies in timeline or plot that require corrections, but I was hoping it won’t be a full rewrite.

Not complaining, I’ve enjoyed the series immensely so far and hope it continues for a while still.

Obviously HV will want to edit the first two books but the story will remain the same, and you won’t need to repurchase books 1 and 2. Book 3 has to follow on from the original versions for a few reasons: I don’t want to disappoint readers and Audible have produced audiobooks, so the final installment has to flow smoothly.
And I’m glad you’ve enjoyed my books so far, thanks for letting me know!

Congrats Mitchell, a little disappointed at the wait but looking forward to re-reading the updated books and seeing the updated book three, you really deserve this deal!

I find the delay more then extended. I see it as exponential. This is one of the many reason that large publishers will eventually fade away. There are to many good self published authors out there to bother waiting another year and a half on a book. I did include you as one of those. Congrats, on sending me looking elsewhere.

Will there be a book 4 ? loved it.

I plan on a second series, which I’ll begin writing after I finish another series in a different universe.
