Harper Voyager version of A Crucible of Souls
Two of the most frequently asked questions since I signed the deal with Harper Voyager are: How different is this version to the self published book? And, Do I need to buy the new version?
As these questions have been asked on many different platforms (my website, Amazon author profile, Facebook, Twitter etc), I thought I’d post an answer here so I can point people to this post when I need to.
There’s no need to buy the new Harper Voyager version of A Crucible of Souls if you enjoyed the previous version. The story is the same. One of my main concerns was doing right by the readers that took a chance on an unknown author, and in doing so put me in this position in the first place. Without you, I’d never have made it this far, nor would I have been able to focus on writing full time. And for that I will be forever grateful.
Harper Voyager wasn’t looking to change the story, rather, they wanted to hone and polish the book into something tighter, sharper, and a touch more focused on Caldan. Their job was to take the structure of a great fantasy, and help finish the building. To polish the floors, take out stairways that lead nowhere, and take a peek inside the closets to make sure a worker didn’t leave anything behind. Their job wasn’t to change my story. Their job was to change my novel, with an eye towards how readers will connect with it.
That said, every edit is designed to improve a book, and as great as the foundation was the changes should hopefully enhance A Crucible of Souls and take it to the next level.
